TMCnet Dark Fiber Week in Review

Expansions, conversions, distribution deals and more – let us take a look at some of this week's top headlines in the Dark Fiber world.

Tower Cloud expanded its network capacity by adding a new fiber optic-based backhaul network in two of its locations. The new network uses pure Ethernet and IP/MPLS broadband consisting of 135 miles of fiber. The upgrade will support the company's efforts in providing high capacity backhaul solutions to wireless carries in select rural Alabama areas.

In other news, citing high demand for consumer 4G services, New Mexico based LEACO will turn its existing infrastructure into an all IP-based network. Microwave backhaul systems are generally a cheaper and more flexible alternative, making them a more attractive option for wireless backhaul.

Also this week, Avnec Memec reached a distribution agreement with HALO Electronics that will allow the company to distribute HALO's communication magnets to its customers in the Americas. Hoping for some synergy, Avnec Memec stated that HALO's technology will allow it to provide an isolation option for existing designs that integrate Ethernet and/or T1/E1 connections.

Last but not least, telecommunications research firm Atlantic-ACM awarded Zayo Group its U.S Long Haul Wholesale Carrier Report Card Award. Zayo's Long Haul network includes connections across the nation, from Chicago and Denver to Minneapolis and New York. The company recently integrated a 360 network that will stretch across nearly 19,000 miles of road.
