TeliSwitch Introduces PON Automated ODF

A passive optical network (PON) is a point-to-multipoint, fiber to the premises network architecture where unpowered optical splitters are used to facilitate a single optical fiber to serve numerous premises, typically 16-128. A PON consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) at the service provider's central office and various optical network units (ONUs) near end users. A PON decreases the amount of fiber and central office equipment needed compared with point-to-point architectures.
Recently, TeliSwitch Solutions introduced its patented PON-AODF that allows dynamic changing of the splitting ratio in Passive Optical Networks (PON). This can be used for service penetration and meeting bandwidth service demand needs.
By implementing PON-AODF, operators can save up to 50 percent on OLT ports as they can remotely adapt PON splitting ratios to growth. This allows the connection of more homes without compromising on future bandwidth demand. The passive optical network is upgraded with adaptive splitting ratio features, while preserving the passive nature of the PON Optical Distribution Network (ODN) by deploying PON-AODF with the OLT, the company stated in a press release.
“TeliSwitch PON-AODF deployment gives service providers the flexibility to install only as many OLT ports as needed to serve connected homes, saving up to 50 percent on PON ports, thus reducing total equipment costs," said Rafi Ben-Atar, co-founder and CEO at TeliSwitch Solutions. "In addition, our PON-AODF reduces overall OPEX (News - Alert) by making optical infrastructure remotely manageable, thereby minimizing human interventions and errors.”
Recently, the company quoted a new research from Pyramid Research, which stated that FTTH lines are expected to almost triple worldwide, from 68 million in 2011 to 198 million in 2016, encouraged by uptake in China, Russia, and the U.S. and increasing installations from Western European incumbent operators.
