Ciena's 100G Coherent Technology Drives Upgrades in Sunset Digital Network
By Calvin Azuri
Ciena Corporation (CIEN) recently announced that its technology solutions will be used to drive improvements in the Sunset Digital network, a company that specializes in providing fiber-optic broadband connectivity. Sunset Digital will leverage Ciena technology solutions to deliver managed wavelengths at bandwidths of up to 100 Gb/s for their customers spanning the northeast Tennessee region.
By upgrading its network, Sunset Digital will now be able to provide broadband service to customers within the region and be able to scale up capacity as and when required in the future. Additionally, the enhanced network will provide Sunset customers across Southeastern United States with the latest healthcare, government, and commerce applications.
In a statement, Paul Elswick, president, at Sunset Digital, said that, “Demand for high-speed, high-capacity bandwidth services is increasing not only in large metropolitan areas, but also in rural areas like those served by Sunset Digital. Even those providers that do operate here cannot purchase the bandwidth they require at low enough cost. By providing greater broadband access to our customers, Ciena’s 100G coherent optical will help position us to better serve our community and help spur economic development in the region.”
Sunset Digital’s state-of-the-art fiber optic network serving the Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee regions brings fast, reliable and affordable broadband access to homes, educational institutes, emergency response agencies, government, financial organizations, and medical institutions.
The company will leverage the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena which has been designed with WaveLogic coherent optical processors. The result will be robust bandwidth delivery for transport customers of Sunset Digital. Furthermore, this will also enable use of bandwidth by local entities who will now have access to high-speed Internet, video and voice services.
Incorporating the OPn architecture of Ciena, the 100G network will ensure 100 times faster transport speeds compared to traditional service currently available in the region. The network upgrade is being funded via a $24M award under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The award has been sanctioned by the Rural Utility Service which is a department of the United States Department of Agriculture. The company is expecting its network expansion to be completed by 2015.
Sunset Digital will also deploy the advanced management solution from Ciena to benefit from simplified low-touch service activation, and to ensure faster service delivery, robust service visualization, and easy network monitoring.
