Recently, Sovernet Fiber Corp chose Ciena’s packet networking and Packet-Optical Transport technology to be deployed in the company’s fiber network. Sovernet is looking to introduce new broadband data and voice services in the future and Ciena’s products will help the company to achieve this goal.

Ciena's Packet Networking Solutions portfolio consists of intelligent devices and software to produce low-touch, high-velocity Carrier Ethernet access and metro networks.

These products offer a common, consistent way to provide various Ethernet services that considerably enhance and automate service delivery and activation.

Ciena sought a solution that would help the company to deploy broadband networks quickly and without any issues. The company needed such a solution to cater to the increasing demand for its broadband products, and will make use of Ciena’s 5150 Service Aggregation Switch, 3930 and 3931 Service Delivery Switches to enjoy enhanced network scalability and programmability.

“We knew that our packet networking portfolio – recognized as reducing deployment and service activation times by 75 percent – would be an attractive option to Sovernet given that they had less than a year to deploy a state-of-the-art transport network,” said Chad Whalen, vice president and general manager, North America Field Operations at Ciena. “This deployment showcases our ability to deliver a complete solution that allows our customers to quickly build an advanced, intelligent infrastructure that provides greater network efficiency, resiliency and service differentiation.”

In 2009, the company introduced a new series of Reconfigurable Switching Systems, which were named “5400” series of the components. This product portfolio includes various multi-terabit Ethernet, OTN and TDM switching systems. These systems can be modified to deploy numerous network elements. It also consists of optical cross-connect, Carrier Ethernet switches, armed with various features and also completely converged packet-optical transport and switching systems.
