Optical Communications Group Runs Fiber to New York City Data Center Affected by Sandy

Optical Communications Group has announced that it is providing emergency restoration of fiber optic services to 75 Broad Street in New York City.

The building hosts a data center that companies such as Fog Creek Software and Squarespace rely on to deliver their websites to users around the world. The data center is providing emergency voice service to customers whose service was knocked out by Hurricane Sandy, which damaged both communications and power up and down the East Coast.

“The road to restoration for many of the buildings in lower Manhattan is going to be challenging," Brad Ickes, president of OCG, said. "Through this difficult time, OCG is committed to working with those impacted by Sandy to make establishing network connections as seamless as possible. Customers are in need of their services, and OCG's unique fiber network is prepared to restore lost connections in an efficient way."

The company’s crews worked for two days pulling cable into the building through manholes and city streets.

The lines can handle 10,000 ds0 lines for the carriers whose lines were damaged by Sandy. OCG provides service to any tenants who have contracts with carriers serving the data center.

OCG’s network stayed up even as the storm ravaged other communications networks in the region.

“A storm of this magnitude leaves many people without essentials such as power and Internet,” Ickes said earlier in November. “At OCG, our first priority is assisting those in need while keeping our network online. OCG has the tools to offer support and is making full use of these resources. Now is the time for us New Yorkers to come together, as we have done before, to get everyone back online, safe and secure, as soon as possible."

Ickes, who is a former New York City police officer, aided first responders in establishing communications networks in the immediate aftermath of the storm along with his company.
