ADC Telecommunications' Patent for Fiber Optic Splitter Modules Approved
ADC Telecommunications, a communications company located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of TE Connectivity (News - Alert), has been assigned a patent (#8,346,045) developed by Steven C. Zimmel (Minneapolis), Trevor Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.), and Ponharith Nhep (Savage, Minn.), for a "fiber optic splitter module." The patent application was filed on Nov. 22, 2010 (#12/951,495). This invention generally relates to fiber optic telecommunications equipment. More specifically, the present invention relates to fiber optic modules and chassis for holding fiber optic modules. Fiber-optic communication systems have been revolutionizing the telecommunications industry, and are playing a major role in its advantages over electrical transmission. In fiber-optic telecommunications systems, it’s common for optical fibers of transmission cables to split into multiple strands, either by optical splitting of a signal carried by a single stranded cable, or by fanning out the individual fibers of a multi-strand cable. Such systems, when installed, are known to provide excess capacity in the installations to support future growth and utilization of the fibers. Often in these installations, modules including splitters or fanouts are used to provide the connection between transmission fibers and customer fibers. To reduce cost and complexity of the initial installation, yet provide options for future expansion, a module mounting chassis capable of mounting multiple modules may be used for installation. Inserting the splitter module through a front opening of the chassis at a mounting location positions the connector of the splitter module for insertion into and mating with the adapter of the chassis. The adapters mounted within the interior of the chassis are integrally formed as part of a removable adapter assembly. Want to learn more about the latest in communications and technology?
