Transmode (News - Alert) AB, a supplier of packet optical networking solutions, recently announced that SpringNet has deployed a next generation network based on Transmode’s TM Series platform with their ROADM (News - Alert) based flexible Optical Networking technology.

SpringNet is a high performance, end-to-end metro service provider and an important division of City Utilities of Springfield, Missouri. It also provides metro Ethernet solutions to its customers in the Springfield metropolitan area and has its own optical network which spans more than 428 route miles. With the view of upgrading this extensive optical network, SpringNet has deployed optical networking solutions from Transmode as a Flexible Optical Networking arena, designed particularly for 40 channels. Successful deployment across the route would upgrade the existing WDM network of SpringNet, enabling them to better meet the future demands of the customers.

With easy installation, quick delivery, and convenient commissioning procedures of Transmode TM-Series, the entire optical network upgrade project of SpringNet has moved very rapidly. From the process of selecting an initial vendor through open tender in the month of September 2012 to developing a live network by the end of November 2012, the network upgrade process has rapidly moved towards completion. The new, upgrades optical network of SpringNet incorporates a mix of Fiber Channels, OC-12, Gigabit Ethernet, OC-48, and 10GbE traffic.

SpringNet has not merely implemented ROADM technology of Transmode into its optical network upgrade process, but has also improved the management efficiency significantly by introducing Transmode’s Enlighten multi-layer management suite. This management technology from Transmode makes maintenance and provisioning complexities easier and convenient to navigate. This also presents real time views of the company’s optical network, showing circuit design and power levels.

Talking about this new upgrade process, Chris Yates, operations and engineering manager at SpringNet, stated that the aim of the company was to deliver highly scalable, flexible, and innovative solutions to the customers efficiently and quickly. For this they needed to replace the existing optical networking system. The previous SpringNet network needed comprehensive manual intervention to implement new services and was complex and costly to maintain. Hence, the company was in need for a cost efficient and easily managed network.

He further said that the latest ROADM network from Transmode not only saved resources and time, but also made it exceptionally easier to implement fresh service offerings effectively. SpringNet now knows the rise or drop of any wavelength from and to any port from the Network Operations Center.

Paul Harrison, Transmode vice-president, North America said that their Flexible Optical Networking technology transformed the level of scalability and flexibility that SpringNet has in their optical network.
