With the evolution of enterprise systems, Ethernet is proving to be the most flexible technology. Video applications, virtual technology, etc. are further pushing this trend ahead making way for 10 GbE. Today, there is a growing demand for products that support the10GBase-T IEEE 802.3an standard.

Transition Networks (News - Alert), a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, and a provider of fiber access technology unveiled its new ION 10Gigabit Ethernet copper to fiber media converter - the new ION x4120-1048.

"Delivering innovative and robust networking solutions is the cornerstone of the ION Platform," says Kevin Faulds, director of Product Management, "and the ION x4120-1048 reinforces that theme by providing energy efficient media conversion for 10GBase-T environments."

This new intelligent optical networking devices is designed for datacenters and high speed connections linking buildings in campus area networks.

Transition’s statement also highlighted on the fact that network managers have a current need to resolve disparities between new equipment with 10GBase-T ports and legacy 10Gigabit Ethernet products with fiber ports. Additionally, the task of converting RJ-45 copper ports to fiber, or vice versa, is yet another task. Power consumption is also an additional concern, particularly for data center operators.

Aligned with today's energy consumption trends, the ION x4120-1048 meets the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet standard by detecting UTP cable length and reducing power consumption accordingly. The ION x4120-1048 addresses these network challenges by converting between one 10GBase-T RJ-45 port and one pluggable, MSA compatible 10GBase-X fiber SFP+ port. This gives network managers the flexibility to run 10Gigabit Ethernet over the medium of their choice at various transmission distances.

The ION x4120-1048 is made available in both stand-alone and chassis card form factors.

Transition Networks also released its new Enterprise-grade 24-port PoE+ managed switch. The SM24TAT4XA supports the IEEE802.3at PoE+ standard, which provides up to 25.5 W to PoE powered network devices.
