Ritter Communications Addresses Demand for Higher Bandwidth with Ciena's Packet Networking Solutions

Ciena Corporation CIEN recently announced that its new packet networking solutions have been selected by communications provider Ritter Communications. The 5160 Service Aggregation Switch (SAS (News - Alert)) from Ciena will enable Ritter to address the surge in customer demand for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) wholesale transport and Internet services, and for addressing mobile backhaul needs of Tier 1 mobile operators.
In a statement, Greg Sunderwood, vice president of engineering, Ritter Communications said, "The 5160 specifically allows us to expand our regional core to accommodate the demand for higher bandwidth and 10G customer interfaces. We've been experiencing significant growth from our Ethernet Business Services as well as our Wholesale Transport and Internet Services, and this technology is a key factor in enabling us to continue to service this demand. The small form factors of the 5160 and 5142 allow us to expand quickly where needed and address the network's hot spots in a cost-effective manner. And since we can't sacrifice on quality of service, the OAM feature set is critical to delivering on our service level agreements to our customers."
Ciena's 5160 SAS has been designed with 10GbE density and features 24 ports in a compact, single rack unit (1RU) form factor, which means Ritter will not be required to install and manage large numbers of equipment. The 5160 offers support for a number of field-proven packet features, such as wire-speed L2 switching with 240 Gigabit per second (Gbps) fabric, and MPLS OAM support service activation testing at line rate. These capabilities will allow Ritter to provide 10GbE service delivery and aggregation and will allow the company to address a variety of business service and backhaul requirements.
Ritter will also use Ciena's new 5142 SAS platform, capable of offering 1GbE to 10GbE aggregation density in a 1RU, fixed chassis form. Both the 5160 and 5142 will deliver 10GbE service activation testing, support for varying temperature range and complete synchronization support, while effectively cutting down on power and space footprints.
Ritter has already deployed Ciena's 5150 SAS, 3930 Service Delivery Switch and 6500 Packet-Optical Platform early this year. These offerings from Ciena have been designed with WaveLogic Coherent Optical Processors, which will support Ritter’s expansion plans for its regional fiber optic network. Furthermore, Ritter will also use Ciena's OneControl Unified Management System to boost operational efficiency and for easy management of the complete suite of Ciena solutions.
