Dark Fiber Week in Review
By Rory J. Thompson
The Dark Fiber Community had a busy week, and we’ve got all the details!
Overseas ZTE (News - Alert), a Chinese telecommunications equipment provider, said it has been selected by Jazztel, a leading telecommunication service provider with its own network in Spain, to deploy a national high-speed broadband fiber to the home(FTTH) network across Spain. The network expansion is in response to the growing demand for high-speed broadband Internet and mobile Internet services in the region. Over the past three years, Jazztel has experienced 20 percent growth in revenue and user base, the company said. The new network is expected to cover three million home and corporate users and bring in a new era for Spain’s broadband market, the company said. Under the terms of the agreement, ZTE will help Jazztel build a broadband network within a period of two years. ZTE provides the telco with an end-to-end solution that includes a full range of services, including equipment, engineering and maintenance.
And, all that fiber is going to need testing, so fiber inspection tools have now become an essential part of every fiber technician's toolbox. EXFO (News - Alert) Inc., a provider of test and service assurance solutions for wireline and wireless network operators, recently launched a next-generation inspection probe, which offers crisp, digital images of optical connectors at three levels of magnification. Officials said that the FIP-400B has been optimized for easy handling by both left- and right-handed users. It boasts of an ergonomic patent-pending design that is based on years of end-user feedback. By integrating advanced automated features, such as a high-performance, fiber image-centering system, FIP-400B helps eliminate the labor-intensive step of localizing the fiber in the image. The FIP-400B, which has been built to simplify and speed up the inspection process, also encompasses ConnectorMax2, an onboard connector-endface pass/fail analysis application based on IEC (News - Alert) or custom standards. It provides accurate and repeatable connector certification in seconds.
