Cavalier Adds HCPS Data Center onto its Richmond Area Fiber Optic Network

Virginia based Cavalier recently said that it has completed the addition of a Henrico County Public Schools, known as HCPS, data center onto its Richmond area fiber optic network.

Company officials said that the new connection enables a secure dedicated Internet access service for HCPS and powers the service provided to its 68 schools.

“In choosing Cavalier, we were able to achieve our goals for increased bandwidth and flexibility,” said Lloyd Brown, director of technology and information services at HCPS.

The Internet access needs at HCPS are never static, said Brown, adding that Cavalier is ready to support additional capacity as the HCPS needs change, and having them local is an additional benefit.

The new service employs a gigabit Ethernet connection from the HCPS data center to Cavalier's core metro network, while the Internet traffic is transported across Cavalier's secure network using advanced wave division multiplexing technology.

The connection to Cavalier’s network is “burstable.” Company officials said that this means that HCPS selects a fixed amount of Internet bandwidth and can select to exceed that threshold as needs dictate.

The district is only charged for the actual usage it needs as a baseline, thus it benefits HCPS, said officials. Moreover, it has the flexibility to meet the changing needs of the schools.

“Cavalier’s solution enables the school district to control expenses while doubling the capacity of the service provided to students, teachers and administration,” said Danny Bottoms, president and CEO at Cavalier.

Cavalier is a full-service provider of telecommunications solutions for business, consumer and government customers. Company offers landline voice, managed network services, and more. Using owned and operated fiber optic network, the company serves its customers throughout the eastern United States.

Earlier this year, Company announced its Virtual Private LAN Service, which combined the Ethernet with IP and the “inherent” security of MPLS in Cavalier’s core fiber network.
