Latest Fiber Closure from 3M Allows Error-Free Rapid Installation
Today, a new solution is available for service providers who want to guard fiber splices over long-haul, metro, local-access and fiber-to-the-premise feeder and distribution networks. The Fiber Dome Closure FDC 12S and Fiber Dome Closure 08M from 3M (News - Alert) Communication Markets Division capitalizes on the company's core strength of environmental and mechanical protection products.
The FDC 12S and 08M closures are developed especially for butt, single or ribbon fiber cable. They are hermetically sealed for aerial, pole/wall, pedestal or below-grade applications. They are made of materials that are extremely capable of resisting chemicals which allows deployment of closures in harsh open-air environments. The rigid O-ring sealing system and the innovative latching mechanism of the closures allow rapid installation that is free from errors.
The FDC 12S and 08M closures make use of the external cable assembly module integrated in the cable entry port system. The ECAM design enables true plug-and-play capability, which helps to lessen the installation expenditure and labor costs. This is because the preparation of cable and installation are done outside the closure body. The cable entry system which is integrated into the system permits the technician to insert and take out cables from the closure without breaking the cable seals.
The FDC 12S closure has a flexible and detachable tray support bracket. It gives the facility for extra slack storage and allows to effortlessly install cables after first installation. A hinged splice tray helps to access any splice without troubling other trays. The FDC 12S closure can hold up to eight splice trays.
The FDC 12S closure has one oval port for express or mid-span cable applications and five round branch cable ports. The oval main cable port holds two 27 mm diameter cables and all five round cable ports holds one 27 mm diameter all-dielectric or armored cable. FDC 12S closure has a splice capacity of 576 single-fiber or 864 mass-fusion splices.
The FDC 08M closure has one oval port for express or mid-span cable applications and eight round branch cable ports. The oval main cable port accommodates two 20 mm diameter cables and each of the round cable ports accommodates one 12 mm diameter all-dielectric or armored cable. FDC 08 M closures have a splice capacity of 48 single-fiber or 144 mass-fusion splices. Carolyn John is a Contributor to TMCnet. To read more of her articles, please columnist page.
