The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Telecommunications Corporation etisalat has spent AED15bn (approximately $4B U.S. dollars) to develop its fiber optic network, said its CEO, Saleh Al Abdouli. He added that this is a long-term investment which will contribute to the process of sustainable development in the UAE and to achieve network readiness in the country.

Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative has chosen the Calix B6 Ethernet Service Access Nodes to provide fiber-based broadband services to Jackson and Owsley counties in Kentucky. PRTC, the Broadband Stimulus Award winner, will deploy gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology and deliver superior services over fiber. The services would include expanded digital television services, extremely fast data services, and high quality voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) services to residences and businesses numbering well over 3500.

The Why of Broadband
Even with all of the investment and development of broadband communications infrastructure going on around the world today, it still seems that some people are not sure what the end results will be, or actually produce in terms of gains in productivity, output, etc. Knowing what the output will be is the why anyone would input investment. Beyond the why is the how. That piece gets a lot easier once the fire is lit, but there are many challenges in building the exact right thing to deliver on the vision.

Rogers Communications to Acquire Atria Networks
Privately owned by Birch Hill Equity Partners, Atria owns and operates a large fibre-optic networks in Ontario. Atria serves a diverse customer base of more than 1,100 customers spanning the public sector, enterprise and carrier providers. The agreement is subject to certain adjustments, according to Rogers, which expects the transaction to close prior to the end of its first quarter, 2011.

Data from Point Topic on the worldwide cost of business and residential bandwidth indicates some interesting patterns. Businesses are subsidizing consumers, which isn't surprising since that has always been the telecommunications model. But the best place for a business to be is in North America and the worst place for consumers is … can you guess? It's North America.
