Mobile Backhaul Will Drive PTP Microwave Market: Report

A new report from Visant Strategies reportedly revealed that mobile backhaul will drive point-to-point microwave market.

According to the report, “PTP Microwave 2010: the World Market for PTP Microwave Radio 2009 to 2015,” the use of point-to-point microwave in wireless networks for backhaul of higher capacity network components will provide additional growth opportunities.

Andy Fuertes, senior analyst at Visant Strategies, said despite a cyclical slowdown experienced by some vendors in the first part of 2009, the PTP microwave market will remain strong. This is attributed to the continuing global build-out of mobile wireless networks, including the continued upgrade in many parts of the world to 3.5G and 4G. Wireless backhaul is still important in both emerging and established markets since in most cases wireline backhaul is not available. The report also details how voice-centric mobile wireless networks will increase backhaul demands and, in turn, PTP microwave radio sales.

The report identifies and analyzes product and application trends in the PTP Microwave market through 2015 providing detailed tables to accompany the qualitative discussion. It is expected that the shipments of PTP microwave radios for wireless backhaul will double from 2008 to 2015, thereby accounting for more than $8 billion market for wireless backhaul in 2015. The overall PTP market is expected to reach almost $11 billion the same year. The report also predicts that PTP shipments for enterprise and private networks will almost double by 2015.

According to Larry Swasey of Visant Strategies, it is software-defined radios and the use of application specific integrated circuits that has made PTP microwave radios lower in price and more capable. In addition, there is utilization of higher capacity radios that support TDM and I/P traffic natively and the use of higher frequency radios as operators look for more available spectrum for backhaul use.

The Visant Strategies report details network deployment patterns and provides global mobile subs, 3.5G/4G subs and all base station and 3.5G/4G base station deployments, as well as collector point, BSC/RNC and MSC (News - Alert) deployments through 2015. In addition, the report considers mobile backhaul, trunking, enterprise, public safety, last mile and broadcast applications in depth and provides shipments and revenues for each market segment through 2015. Detailed regional trends and forecasts along with vendor strategy and market share are also included in the report.
