Airvana, Inc. has introduced the HubBub UMTS High-Capacity Femtocell. It meets the demands of mobile operators who have to deliver better 3G coverage and advanced services to office buildings and public spaces.

According to a press release, the HubBub UMTS High-Capacity Femtocell (News - Alert) is standards-compliant and provides optimized features such as concurrent call capacity, range and HSPA performance.

Femtocells allow operators to improve in-building coverage, call quality and data performance for residential subscribers via the public Internet for backhaul.

Airvana’s (News - Alert) HubBub UMTS High-Capacity Femtocell has been designed to offer range, call capacity, manageability and physical deployment options according to the requirements of enterprises. Operators will be able to deliver improved coverage and performance in office environments and public spaces thereby securing new customers, increasing revenue and reducing churn.

“The major drawback to femtocells in commercial or enterprise environments has always been low concurrent call capacity, which significantly limited usefulness in a business setting,” stated Peter Jarich (News - Alert), research director, Wireless Infrastructure and Converged Core, Current Analysis, in the release.

“Capacity increases, along with improved range and performance will open the door for much greater acceptance of femtocells as a viable business technology,” added Jarich.

The new femtocell features device support capability for 16 simultaneous users, 21.6 Mbps download speeds and 5.7 Mbps upload speed besides enabling a coverage range of up to 600 meters. Each of the devices can support up to 40 simultaneous users of low-bandwidth data applications such as push e-mail.

This is suitable for offices and public spaces where many smartphone users check e-mail, make voice calls, conduct intensive data sessions or update social networking sites. Similar to residential femtocells the new HubBub High-Capacity femtocell uses a standard high-speed Internet connection for backhaul.

It is also compatible with 3GPP Iuh femtocell standards. It is a plug-and-play solution and designed for installation by non-specialized staff thereby reducing deployment costs, said company sources.

Sanjeev Verma (News - Alert), vice president, Femtocell Business and Corporate Development, Airvana, explained that operators are using femtocells as a tool to capture high-value corporate business and cost-effectively deliver 3G mobile data services in heavy-use public spaces. The HubBub UMTS High-Capacity Femtocell is a suitable option for operators who wish to intelligently add coverage and capacity and open new business opportunities, he noted.
