CommScope Launches New PON Solution

CommScope Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, announced a new PON (Passive Optical Network) solution to the industry that is flexible to both EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) and GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technologies. This new solution will be introduced next month during the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo.

CommScope has played a role in virtually all the world’s best communication networks. Their portfolio of end-to-end solutions includes critical infrastructure that their customers need to build high-performing wired and wireless networks.

The industry has recognized this technology standard as important to delivering IP and Ethernet services and business communications. CommScope’s new end-to-end PON solution is completely scalable and provides operators with the bandwidth and the additional service options that their subscribers expect.

Ric Johnsen, the senior vice president, Broadband, CommScope stressed that technology is continuing to progress at a rapid pace and service operators must keep up with their customers’ increasing demand for bandwidth. He added that their new PON solution provides an alternative technology for operators to deploy competitive Ethernet services to small and medium sized business, and will also provide improved bandwidth to rural areas. He went on to add that the launch demonstrated how CommScope continued to expand its ability to deliver more end-to-end, scalable access networks to the industry.

The portfolio includes optical line terminals (OLTs), optical network units (ONUs), system-management software and installation components. The OLTs (central office equipment) provide high throughput and capacity in an easy-to-deploy and maintainable chassis. With both 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps capabilities, the system provides an easy migration path for future capacity. The ONUs (customer-premises equipment) include single- and multiuser and small-form-factor-pluggable units. They feature an assortment of ports for Ethernet, Power over Ethernet and voice services, along with Wi-Fi capabilities. The solution integrates seamlessly into an operator’s management architecture with software that performs system backups and upgrades, as well as real-time fault monitoring. Small and large OLTs and multiple ONUs provide operators with the instruments needed to optimize their network architecture while minimizing first-install costs and reducing operating costs and capital expenditures.

CommScope is targeting its solution to rural communities, electric cooperatives, multiple system operators, municipalities and governments that want to deliver advanced voice, video, and data services over fiber optic cables. The solution is suitable for residential FTTx, commercial access networks, multi-dwelling units, commercial in-building networks, security and building automation and wireless access points. Combined with CommScope’s optical tap technology, it makes FTTx deployments affordable even in low-density applications.

This new PON solution will be introduced during the upcoming SCTE Cable-Tec Expo hosted by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers, from October 17-19, 2012 in Orlando, Florida at the Orange (News - Alert) County Convention Center.
