GlobeNet Upgrades its Submarine Fiber Optic Cable System Capacity
By Shamila Janakiraman
GlobeNet, Oi’s international subsidiary and provider of submarine capacity revealed plans to complete its third network capacity upgrade on its lowest latency, fiber optic cable network connecting the Americas. Oi provides bundled services in Brazil besides offering local and long-distance voice transmission, mobile telephony, broadband and pay TV.
Officials added that this upgrade will increase GlobeNet’s network capacity to 1.2Tbps, and doubles its current lit capacity. The project is expected to be completed by Q4, 2012.
The company’s fiber-optic submarine system connects the Americas via low latency routing and high performance networks. The network upgrade will further enhance the existing advanced network architecture to address the growing demand for bandwidth-intensive services from carriers, Internet Service Providers, Social Networks, CDNs, financial services, and end-users across Latin America and the United States.
The international transport solutions delivered by the company serves Brazil, Bermuda, Colombia, United States and Venezuela. The products and services delivered include International Private Line, Wavelength, Carrier Ethernet and IP Transit.
GlobeNet also announced the successful completion of trials with multiple coherent 100G technology platforms. This highlights its capability to carry more than 12Tbps over its four fiber pair subsea cable system. An augmentation of 10 times the capacity compared to the original design. After the next upgrade, GlobeNet can deliver more bandwidth with no need for infrastructure deployment, said officials.
“The tremendous increase of bandwidth capability further solidifies GlobeNet’s position as a market leader with a superior network infrastructure,” said Erick W. Contag, COO of GlobeNet.
“Our network is ready today to support the future growth in Latin America, and in particular Brazil, where we are already seeing an increase in demand for networks to address high performance applications and services, such as 4G/LTE (News - Alert), FFTH, IPTV including HD and 3D video programming, and support of major sporting events taking place in Brazil in the coming years,” Contag added.
Recently, GlobeNet was named winner of the fourth Annual 2012 Golden Bridge Awards for its Ultra Low Latency Trading Connection to Brazil, in the ‘Best Deployment in Latin American’ category. The award is given in recognition of organizational performance, products and services, innovations, and successful deployments from every major industry in the world.
