Infinera's DTN-X Platform Delivers 8Tb/s Super-Channel Transmission Across 800 Kms of DSF

Digital optical networks provider, Infinera (News - Alert) (INFN), and Japan-based Nissho Electronics recently demonstrated the capability of Infinera’s DTN-X platform to run the latest super-channel technology at eight Terabits per second (Tb/s) on 800 Kms of ITU-T G.653 Dispersion Shifted Fiber (DSF). The demonstration was carried out at the NET (News - Alert) Frontier Center.

In a statement, Kimitaka Sato, executive officer at Nissho, said that, "This test truly demonstrates the value of the DTN-X platform to service providers with DSF assets. In the past, service providers may not have been able to run even multiple 10 Gb/s transmission over this kind of fiber. Infinera's solution proves that we can run the very latest super-channel technology at 8Tb/s on DSF, which is impressive."

Because of the low chromatic dispersion in the C-Band, the deployment of high-capacity dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transport technology in DSF fiber, which is deployed across Japan, is a challenge. This makes high capacity optical transmission over long distance a problem and the result is restricted capacities.

Infinera's DTN-X platform, which has been developed over 500 Gb/s Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC) and FlexCoherent Processor (News - Alert) to ensure software-configurable modulation, supports long haul 500 Gb/s super-channels capable of displaying Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensation performance. Network operators will now be able to use Infinera’s solution to leverage existing fiber plant investments and easily run advanced multi-Terabit, long-haul WDM transmission technology solutions.

Dave Welch, Infinera co-founder, EVP and CSO, said that, "This trial is unique because it not only achieves world class reach and capacity over a very difficult type of optical fiber, it shows how quickly capacity can be turned up for service providers today. This capability can be combined with our recently introduced Instant Bandwidth solution on the DTN-X to allow service providers to compete more effectively and achieve a success-based business model."

FlexCoherent capabilities of the system were also established by Infinera during the demonstration effectively proving that software-select different modulation formats including QPSK and BPSK can enhance reach and capacity. The test proves that global deployment of the latest high capacity optical transport solutions by service providers on existing DSF fiber can be carried out cost-effectively over current infrastructure.
