ADVA Optical Networking (News - Alert) stated that its WDM-PON trial in Austria should bring about uncontended gigabit connectivity to residential subscribers and take high-speed broadband access to the underserved rural areas in that country.

ADVA explained that it is conducting the trial along with Energie AG Oberösterreich Data GmbH (Data GmbH) and ELCON Systemtechnik GmbH over the network installed in the Austrian municipality of Allhaming by Data GmbH.

Markus Fellhofer, head of fiber-to-the-home at Data GmbH, asserted, “Customers’ thirst for data is increasing dramatically. However, many regions don’t have the necessary network to respond. The key question is how do you build a network that can satisfy this demand while providing the best possible broadband experience, especially as the network needs to be future-proof? These are some of the very questions that we seek to answer with this trial. Residential WDM-PON technology is still in its infancy. Real-life trials such as this will help it to mature and are key in developing scalable and future-proof FTTH solutions. The residents of Allhaming are direct beneficiaries of this. They are already experiencing the impact high-speed broadband access can have on their daily lives.”

ADVA stated that the WDM-PON (Wavelength Division Multiplexing-Passive Optical Network) is a new concept specifically developed for access and backhaul networks and it utilizes multiple different wavelengths (WDM) over a physical point-to-multipoint fiber infrastructure that contains no active components (PON).

ADVA’s own WDM-PON technology enables operators to deliver high bandwidth to multiple endpoints over long distances and is capable of serving up to 1,000 endpoints with at least 1,000Mbit/s over a distance of up to 100km.

According to ADVA, the results and readings derived from the Austrian trial will be leveraged to expand optical broadband delivery to a further thirty development areas in the Upper Austria region in 2014 connecting more users and the company will also be expanding its partnerships to include additional technologies as well.

Jörg-Peter Elbers, vice president of advanced technology at ADVA Optical Networking, added, “This trial isn’t just about technology, it’s about people, it’s about communities, it’s about the digital society.”
