Lightower Expands Fiber Network in Greater Baltimore
By Rahul Arora
Lightower Fiber Networks, an all-fiber provider of custom, high-capacity network services that ensure optimal application and business performance, recently announced that it has expanded its fiber network in greater Baltimore, Maryland region. Also, the company announced that it plans to add more fiber capacity to its existing markets in Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia locations. Lightower completed the expansion of 400-mile all-fiber network in the Washington, D.C. metro area in April.
With the network expansion in greater Baltimore, Lightower will be able to offer services like Ethernet from 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps; wavelength service from 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps; dedicated Internet access to 10 Gbps; data center and cloud connectivity solutions; video transport solutions and private network solutions. The company hopes to provide these services to numerous commercial buildings, health care facilities, educational facilities and government locations in the area.
"Baltimore and the surrounding areas are renowned for research and development, health care, education and government," explained Rob Shanahan, CEO of Lightower. "These types of organizations demand fantastic amounts of bandwidth, and every year that demand increases. The trick is getting the fiber network to where the customers need it. These dynamics of the marketplace are proving that metro networks are becoming increasingly important in the end-to-end delivery of high-bandwidth solutions. At Lightower, we will continue to invest aggressively to bring our network to more and more customers."
In related news, Lightower Fiber Networks announced it has established a presence in BYTEGRID's state-of-the-art 214,000 sq. ft. Silver Spring, Maryland data center. As part of Lightower's continued strategy of aggressive network expansion, Lightower will leverage BYTEGRID's growing presence as a leading network interconnection point to offer turnkey "building-to-cage" and "cage-to-cage" network transport solutions as part of BYTEGRID's "Maryland Connect" program. In addition to BYTEGRID's data center customers, the agreement makes Lightower's comprehensive suite of fiber-based solutions available to hundreds of new commercial buildings and data centers throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
